Normally he wouldn't have proceeded to battle, but because he is (from the) Kuchiki family he had talent, he was concerned about Ginrei and even though his body was weak and couldn't proceed to battle he "had to become the next head of the family" so he became a lieutenant. But after all he died.

久保：能力があるんだけど、大人しいっていうか、すごい優しい人だったんです。
Kubo: He had abilities, but I should say he was a rather quiet/obedient, amazing, kind person.
